The Praxilum Human-Centered Learning Design (HCLD) practice, based on Design Thinking, creates a pattern language for learning design which significantly enhances both the learner experience and the effectiveness of learning programs in the workplace by incorporating four key process activities:
1 – Define Performance Needs (Objectives-Metrics)
With a focus on improving Workplace Performance, the HCLD approach begins by defining performance needs in clear and observable behavioral language and also establishing the method(s) to be used to determine if we have achieved those objectives. Beginning with the end in mind ensures we clearly know what success looks like and how we are going to get there.
2 - Gain Learner Perspective (Empathy-Learner Centricity)
Empathy is the cornerstone of HCLD. By deeply understanding the needs, challenges, and motivation of employees, we create learning experiences that are highly relevant and engaging. This user-centric approach ensures that learning materials and methods resonate with learners in the context of real-world challenges.
3 – Design and Prototype the Experience
HCLD incorporates a process of prototyping, testing, and refining solutions. This allows us to evolve our products based on feedback from target learners. Through this adaptation, the learning experience becomes more aligned with learners’ needs, increasing its relevance, engagement and ultimately effectiveness.
HCLD designed programs foster a problem-solving mindset. By creating experiences to engage learners in activities requiring critical thinking and creative problem-solving, we enable employees to develop skills directly applicable to their roles. This not only enhances their learning experience but also contributes to their overall effectiveness and career growth.
4 - Implement as a Holistic Learning & Performance System
The modality in which a Learning Solution is implemented has a major impact on its effectiveness. In addition to creating learning resources, our HCLD approach includes a review of implementation platforms and strategies for dissemination, tracking of engagement, and performance support. We work with our clients to assess their current environment for learning and help define actions, plan for continuous improvement within current organizational constraints. Our recommendations may include new technologies for content delivery, learning management and capturing of learning metrics from learner perception to performance.
